Starting with an interest that I can't let go of - a dark episode of history, a collection of classical music, or even a small selection of poetry, I create a series.

While planning and painting, I surround myself with associated music, literature, history and images; the emotional experiences and musings that arise guide the individual paintings.

The paintings evolve over months, as I layer textures and media with charcoal and metal leaf before glazing luminous translucent oils on top.

Some days you need a break!

I will often paint smaller works to play with color, composition, limited color choices, or try out a new subject matter.

Studies are usually limited to oil paint, whereas Petite Art may be straight oil, or a simplified variation of the Fine Art process.

These are painted on assorted surfaces, including canvas, canvas panel, wood panels or paper, and range in sizes.

Art is not created in a vacuum, and sometimes the emotion I need to express, or the story I need to tell does not fit into the other categories.

For example, when I go adventuring, I like to use watercolor and ink for urban sketching.

Sometimes, embroidery, needlefelting and fabric are needed to tell the story.

And for others, it needs to be explored in the style of an art zine.
